IT’S NOT EASY BEING GREEN

I yawn as I shuffle into the kitchen in just my jeans to make coffee. Lord, I’m tired. My date from last night kept me up until five a.m., and I’m hoping I can get her out of here before Joanna emerges from her room.

“Jeeves?”

“Yes, Toby?”

“Is there any way to make this room less bright?”

“Of course. All the windows are fitted with UV-rated smart film.” There’s a pause, and then the bank of windows in the living room turns dark grey. “Is that better?”

“Much.” I put two mugs into the coffeemaker. “Can you make me a couple of long blacks?”

“Of course.” The coffee machine starts doing its thing, and I lean back against the island bench. “Would you like me to tell the young woman in your bedroom that there’s coffee waiting for her?”

I yawn again and shake my head. “I’m still not used to you talking to me in the bathroom. You’d probably give her a heart attack. She said she’d come out after her shower.”

“Very well.”

I get some bread and shove a couple of slices into the toaster. “What time did Joanna get back last night?”

“She didn’t.”

I frown. “She didn’t come home?”

“No.”

My throat gets tight, and when I swallow, it’s like my larynx is the size of a baseball. “I see.”

I grab a jar of peanut butter from the pantry and rip the top off before slapping it onto the counter.

“Toby, are you all right?”

“Totally fine.”

I grab a butter knife and a plate, and they clatter against the cool marble.

“Your aggressive demeanor indicates you aren’t fine. Would you like to talk about it?”

The toast pops up, and I smear both pieces with peanut butter. “Would I like to talk about Joanna staying out all night with an utter douche nozzle? No, I really wouldn’t.”

I shove the toast in my mouth and bite down, trying like hell to push my feelings aside. I have zero right to be jealous of anyone Joanna dates. As a friend, I can own being disappointed in her choice of men, but that doesn’t justify the absolute rage of tension currently rocking my body.

“Toby, may I suggest some deep breathing to make you feel better?”

“Jeeves, may I suggest you shutting the fuck up for a minute while I figure out how to process this?”

“Of course.” He’s silent for a second, then adds, “Not to brag, but I’m excellent at processing things.”

I drop my head. “Not really the time for that flex, but sure.”

I’m almost done with my first piece of toast when I hear the elevator and realize it’s Joanna coming home.

Dear God, if you value my sanity at all, don’t let him be with her. I can cope with the thought of them spending the night together if I don’t have to see an actual Public Display of Affection.

I take a large mouthful of black coffee and curse as it burns the roof of my mouth.

Ow! Fuck!

I’m pouring some cold water into my cup when Joanna comes around the corner and sees me.
